Cato T. Laurencin is University Professor, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia. He is also the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the school.
Dr. Laurencin earned his B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, his Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a Hugh Hampton Young Scholar, and his M.D. from the Harvard Medical School where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Laurencin completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard University and a fellowship in Shoulder Surgery and Sports Medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell Medical College in New York.
Dr. Laurencin’s academic interests are in the areas of functional tissue engineering, biomaterials, drug delivery, gene therapy and nanotechnology. Honored at the White House, Dr. Laurencin received the Presidential Faculty Fellowship Award from President William Clinton in recognition of his research work bridging medicine and engineering. Dr. Laurencin is an International Fellow in Biomaterials Science and Engineering. He is the recipient of the William Grimes Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Nicolas Andry Award from the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons for Orthopaedic Research, the Clemson Award from the Society for Biomaterials for Contributions to the Biomaterials Literature, and the Leadership in Technology Award from the New Millennium Foundation. Most recently Dr. Laurencin received the Scientific American 50 Award for his work in Tissue Engineering.
Dr. Laurencin serves on the editorial board of 15 Journals including The Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, Biomaterials, Applied Biomaterials, Regenerative Medicine, the Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology, and Tissue Engineering. He is an Assistant Editor for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.
In public policy, Dr. Laurencin is a member of the National Science Foundation’s Directorate of Engineering Advisory Committee (ADCOM). He was formerly a member of the National Science Advisory Board of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Advisory Council for the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Diseases Institute at N.I.H.
Dr. Laurencin is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
