Abstract Submission

The 24th Houston Conference on Biomedical Engineering Research includes oral and poster presentations. Papers may be proffered in either category using the abstract submission form in the links below. Based upon the thematic organization of the conference, the program committee may also solicit presentations to complement the proffered papers. If you are responding to such a solicitation, please indicate that on the abstract submission form. At least the presenting author of each accepted submission is expected to register for the conference.

Abstracts must be received by 3 November 2006 in order to ensure their full consideration for the program. The notification of rejected submissions will be made prior to the early, discounted registration deadline of 1 December 2006. The final program, showing the session to which each accepted submission is assigned, will be posted on this Web site by 21 December 2006.

The instructions for formatting abstracts are intended to produce a uniform style in the book of abstracts that is provided to each registered attendee. Using one of the word processor templates provided below should make this easier. Abstracts may be submitted by Email or through an online submission page, or, if need be, sent on a computer-readable medium to the Society's mailing address.

Using the Word ProcessingTemplates

The Word template may be installed by downloading it and placing it in the correct Templates folder (e.g., C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates). One may also open it in Word and then perform a File -- Save As... operation, saving it as a .dot type document. By default, it will be placed in the general templates folder. Then to create an abstract, one performs a File -- New operation, choosing to create the document from a template, and then choose the AbstrText2007 template. The Word template may also be opened by OpenOffice Writer. You may find that you need to unprotect the template in order to insert figures.

The OpenDocument template may be installed in OpenOffice Writer by downloading it and saving it to the disk and then performing the operation File -- Templates -- Organize -- choose a Templates directory -- Commands -- Import Template and selecting the downloaded file in the ensuing file system browser.

Authors are kindly asked to keep the file size of the abstract submission below two megabytes.

When one has finished composing an abstract in either program, one would then save the abstract as a document file (e.g., as a .doc file in Word or a .ott file in OpenOffice). A file name that includes the corresponding author's last name is suggested.

Submitting an Abstract

To submit the abstract, one would repeat the installation and completion process for the abstract submission form templates (Word, OpenDocument) or complete the PDF form in Acrobat and saving the abstract submission form to a file. (Note that the free Acrobat Reader cannot save the completed form.) Again, including the corresponding author's last name in the file name is suggested. Then, one would send an Email message to abstracts@hsemb.org with both the abstract submission form and the abstract text files as attachments.

Alternatively, one may complete the submission information online and upload the completed abstract text file through the online abstract submission page.

Electronic submission is strongly preferred, but if need be, copy the completed abstract submission form and the completed abstract text file to a floppy disk or CD-ROM that is readable by Microsoft Windows. Mail it to
