Suggestions for Preparing an Effective Poster

Mounting and Removing Materials

Posters will be displayed Thursday and Friday. Mounting supplies and assistance will be available in the poster exhibit area from 8 to 10 am, Thursday, Feb. 10, and other times by request. Posters should be removed by 4 pm on Friday afternoon. Remaining materials will be removed after 4:30 pm. You may arrange with the conference desk to forward your materials to you.

Materials should be mounted on thin, colored poster paper or cardboard. (Do not use heavy board, which may be difficult to keep in position on the poster board.) You may want to group logically consistent sections or columns of the poster on backgrounds of the same color. Materials may be mounted on the board by means of VelcroTM that will be provided in the area.

Please do not write or paint on the poster boards. You may wish to have on hand a tablet of sketch paper and suitable drawing materials.

Authors are expected to attend their poster as indicated in the program. A handout of your material may prove helpful for your audience.

Arranging Materials

The poster board surface is relatively small, only 1.15 m (3'10") wide by 1.15 m (3'10") high. Prepare a title for the top of your poster including author(s) and affiliation(s). Letters should be at least 2.5 cm (1") high. Arrange materials in columns rather than rows. An introduction should be placed on the upper left and conclusion(s) on the lower right, both in large typeset. Posters will be presented in the program sequence.

Illustrations

Keep in mind that the poster will be viewed from a distance. Each illustration should have a heading of 1 or 2 lines in large type stating the "take-home" message. Detailed information should be provided in a legend in smaller type below. This information replaces the commentary that would ordinarily constitute the body of a manuscript, but in abbreviated form. It should describe the content of the figure and conclusions to be drawn from it.

Student Poster Competition

Posters that have a student as the first author (undergraduate, graduate or resident/fellow) can be entered into the poster competition. Judging of these posters will be Thursday afternoon and the announcement of the winner will be made Friday during the plenary session. A certificate and $200 prize will be awarded to the winning poster.
